This collection contains photoprints and photocopies of numerous manuscripts owned privately and by public institutions, as well as an original inventory of the estate of John Henry Belter. Manuscripts photocopied or photoprinted include orders for the execution of his will, correspondence with the U.S. Patent Office concerning his patent, a photostat of a chair design, specifications for the construction of his factory at 3rd Avenue and 76th Street in New York City, and posthumous correspondence concerning the finances of the estate and the business.

John Henry Belter was a cabinetmaker from New York City known for developing the laminated, carved Rococo Revival style of the mid-1800s known as Belter furniture. Born in Germany in 1804, Belter apprenticed in Ulm, a city near Wurttemburg. Sometime between 1840-1844 he moved to New York City where he operated a shop at 40 1/2 Chatam Square.
